Les différents types de chaussettes

Socks are an essential everyday fashion accessory. They are obviously what "dresses up" your outfit, but they are also an essential comfort item. Socks, French or not, can be of different sizes or natures. But what's important is to be comfortable in your socks. The saying talks about being "uncomfortable in one's shoes," but before shoes, there are socks. And if you're not comfortable in your socks, it will be difficult to be comfortable at all!
So there are three or four different types you can wear: mid-calf socks, knee-high socks, ankle socks, and no-show socks. Some categorize no-show socks with ankle socks, hence the indecision between three or four main families. We will discuss each of them here.

Mid-Calf Socks

Mid-calf? That means everything and nothing at the same time. You could say that this name leaves a lot of room for subjectivity!
Despite its imprecise name, we are talking about the most popular sock in France here.
These are classic socks that are versatile and suitable for all situations and seasons.
They are also called "classic" socks or "standard" socks, which is already a bit clearer. This is the preferred model at Frenchaussette.

They can be used in many cases and are ideal for everyday wear.
These socks are called mid-calf because they generally reach just above the ankle. This allows them to provide daily comfort. You can wear them to work, for going out, and even for sports, depending on the material used!

Knee-High Socks (or Over-the-Calf)

Thanks to their longer length, knee-high socks will cover your feet and legs up to above the calf. This model, also called over-the-calf, can be suitable for the winter period. These socks absolutely must be worn under trousers. Be careful not to make a style mistake!
These socks offer a very high level of comfort. They are ideal if you want to cover your calves and shins. This is the star model in Italy; all men wear them. However, they are not truly successful in France.

Ankle Socks and No-Show Socks

Ankle socks are simply shorter sock models. You generally wear them during spring and summer. Socks are a real fashion accessory, and ankle socks are extremely trendy right now among young people. Indeed, the ultimate style is to show your ankles... so you have to wear ankle socks!
Men generally wear very classic ankle sock models, matching their shoes. Women, however, show more originality and sometimes wear models with frills or lace.
Ankle socks can become "no-show." In this case, as their name indicates, they are not visible and are hidden by shoes. However, be careful, wearing no-show socks is not recommended for sports activities, as your foot risks moving too much within the sock.
This is the ideal model for anyone who doesn't want to go barefoot in their shoes in the summer!

And there you have it, all you have to do is find the right sock for your foot! Knee-high, mid-calf, or ankle sock, all different types of socks are out there.
